Illinois Biology Storyline Professional Development Virtual Academy:

ASEC facilitators will host targeted intervention/support sessions for teachers and/or departments implementing Biology Storylines who require guidance, assistance, or suggestions for how to adopt the curriculum to meet their students’ needs. Possible topics to be addressed include, pacing, assessment, barriers to 3D teaching and learning, intra-district communication, utilizing a co-teaching model, and IEP/504 accommodations in the learning environment.

Teachers who are implementing the Africa Storyline - both the original or 2-storyline model - will take priority during these sustained support sessions.

Homeostasis Crash Course Parts I and II:

ASEC facilitators will host two sessions on the Homeostasis Storyline to prepare teachers and/or departments implementing Biology Storylines who require guidance, assistance, or suggestions for how to adopt the curriculum to meet their students’ needs. Possible topics to be addressed include, pacing, assessment, barriers to 3D teaching and learning, intra-district communication, utilizing a co-teaching model, and IEP/504 accommodations in the learning environment. Part I of the Homeostasis Crash Course starts with a review of the Africa Summative Assessment to better understand the previously addressed dimensions. From there, teachers will observe the anchoring phenomenon of disappearing otter populations in the Pacific Northwest. Participants will then experience the first 2 weeks of the Homeostasis Storyline through the perspective of both student and educator, prompting participants to consider various models that represent ecosystem dynamics.

Part II of the Homeostasis Crash Course will task participants with considering how the ecosystem dynamics they explored in Part I share similarities with organismal, cellular and molecular processes that can be observed in marine mammals. Rotating from student-hat to teacher-hat, participants will examine how real-world data drives student thinking and builds towards a summative assessment that doubles as a transfer-task and possible semester exam.
